How to Switch to a Low GI Diet


The basic technique for eating the low GI way is simply a “this for that” approach – ie, swapping high GI carbs for low GI carbs. You don’t need to count numbers or do any sort of mental arithmetic to make sure you are eating a healthy, low GI diet.

  • Use breakfast cereals based on oats, barley and bran
  • Use breads with wholegrains, stone-ground flour, sour dough
  • Reduce the amount of potatoes you eat
  • Enjoy all other types of fruit and vegetables
  • Use Basmati or Doongara rice
  • Enjoy pasta, noodles, quinoa
  • Eat plenty of salad vegetables with a vinaigrette dressing

Lite n' easy - The winner

Yippeee at last I have nailed it. Its going to be Lite n' easy for me. The decision was made based on several factors and primarily considering our lifestyle.
I decided to start with the 1200 Calorie meal plan. Its quite expensive for us, however I have made a commitment to loose weight. There would have been several other alternatives to achieve the same, however with a 8 month old baby boy, full time work and taking care of the house chores I think Liteneasy was the most appropriate choice.

Advantages of lite n easy
  • Don't have to cook ( estimated 1 hr a day for brekfast, lunch and dinner)
  • That means less utensils to clean and hopefully none if my husband cleans up after him.( estimated 30 min saving)
  • Home delivered meals which means time saved shopping at Coles, Woolies and Alids (estimated to be easily about 1.5 to 2 hrs a week)
  • Since they provide breakfast, lunch and dinner for me that has pre defined calarofic content I dont have to worry about reading the "nutritional facts" label on the products.

After several hours of research and reading through hundreds of fourms and half a dozen websites I finally short listed 3 Diet Programs.

Jenny Craig- am yet to call her dispite the overdoze of "Have you called Jenny yet?" advertisments.

Its been quite night mare to even come down to the last three especially with the pleothra of diet programs out there.

The finalists were determined based on a scoring and weitage system my husband developed. This was to ensure that what ever program I choose it suited my lifestyle.

Weighing In

Finally I have decided to do something about my weight. For all the right reasons I am overweight and moving towards obese. I am 5ft 10 and in relative terms for a woman quite tall. However I tip the scales at around 86 Kg. Now thats where the issue is. My BMI (Body Mass Index) is 27.1 and a BMI between 25-30 is overweight.

Now for a 27 year woman, a full time worker, a mom with a 8 month baby and a full time wife managing weight and controlling what I eat is an added headache, but if left to itself I am sure I will land up being obese.

After a lot of comparisons and lifestyle choices I decided to go with lightneasy.
